North Korean leader Kim Jong Un crossed the southern side of the DMZ for a summit with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, the first time a North Korean leader has stepped into the territory since 1953.

The Korean War (1950–53)
At the end of the Korean War, after 2 years of negotiation, an armistice was signed on July 27, 1953, at Panmunjom on the 38th parallel. A demilitarised zone was set up which stands to this day.
